Protecting your Business from Ransomware

RansomwareViruses can
often catch computer users unaware – with one wrong click giving hackers access
to data and money. But a new type of malicious software is causing business
owners to choose to pay the hackers who are demanding a ransom.

Ransomware
is software designed
to block access to a computer system until a sum of money is paid. And if that sum is fairly low, and results in immediate
access back into systems, it makes sense to some business owners to pay it.

At Network Support Solutions we have been
contacted by a number of businesses affected by ransomware on their systems.
Business can effectively be halted as employees have no access at all to
systems. Businesses need to protect themselves
against malicious software in order to prevent the system freeze from ever
taking place. A lot of businesses think they have
adequate security in place but viruses and malicious software adapts over time
– and security measures often remain unchanged.

We are urging clients to become part of
Cyber Essentials, a new Government-backed and industry supported scheme to
guide businesses in protecting themselves against cyber threats. The scheme provides businesses of all sizes with clarity
on good basic cyber security practice and by focusing on basic cyber hygiene,
companies will be better protected from the most common cyber threats.

Cyber Essentials is for all
organisations, of all sizes, in all sectors and the Government is encouraging
businesses to adopt the requirements as appropriate to their business. This is
not limited to companies in the private sector, but is also applicable to universities,
charities and public sector organisations.

Essentials on www.gov.uk.
